ffdShow is an excellent decoder of these video formats:

MPEG4, DivX3,4 and 5, XVid, WMV 1

n.player displays subtitles and OSD directly in the video, ATI and Matrox in Theatre mode are then also able to display them (without the need of G400 subtitler, etc.).
